TYPES OF SCARSTwo types of scars can be discerned: Hypertrophic: caused by an excess accumulation of dermal tissue with fibroblast, elastin and collagen fibre growth. When the extension of the hypertrophic scar is wider and longer than the wound that caused it, the scar is known as keloid. This type of scar occurs as a consequence of traumatic or surgical injuries, a good example are the keloids that appear after a caesarean section or after breast reduction surgery in the horizontal part of the inverted T scar. Atrophic: Those that are produced after the destruction of dermal collagen. Examples of atrophic scars are those that appear after an inflammatory process such as acne or chickenpox. Stretch marks can be classified as atrophic scars, since destruction of the dermal tissue also occurs here.
