EXCESS PERSPIRATION: HYPERHIDROSISWhat Is Hyperhidrosis?Hyperhidrosis manifest as excessive sweating in certain areas of the body such as armpits, hand, feet, etc. This excessive sweating can severely limit the patient’s daily life, since simple acts like shaking hands or writing can become a problem. How Can It Be Treated?Up until now there were few truly effective treatments. Deodorants and antiperspirants can be used but they have a limited efficacy and short term effect. Nowadays we have botulinum toxin (Botox), a substance that is injected superficially into the areas to be treated, significantly decreasing the amount of sweat produced. What Is Botox?Botulinum toxin is a toxin that blocks the stimuli that trigger the production of sweat. The toxin is injected superficially into the areas to be treated. In the hands or feet, it requires local anaesthesia. In the armpits anaesthesia is not required. The effect of this toxin lasts about 6 months and thus it is not necessary to perform several sessions. Results are very satisfactory, mainly in the hands and armpits.
